I have said that no is a positive word which is capable of inspiring many people. It did inspire me too, if not in a big way but in a way which made me change the perspective of life. I am tall, and this was always an asset. I was encouraged to take part in games like basketball, but there was a hitch I had flat feet and could not balance myself and always used to trip over. The basketball coach always ridiculed this fact and though I would never make it to the team. At times I felt like giving up, but I knew if I ever gave up then it would mean I myself support the coach's remarks about me. I practiced hard, and did a few exercises to gain stamina and control of my feet movements. The coach saw that I was improving and he was surprised. One day, he gave me few minutes as a substitute and I scored a basket. And from then there has been no looking back, and I really enjoyed playing! Though I might not have become an international basketball champ, I became a person who could face any challenges with real grit. I am obese, that's what my friends say. I need to reduce weight and hence I have resolved not to eat cheese. It is no to cheese, and I am saddened by this resolution. Though I hate my resolution, I have no other choice. My friends try irritating me and they order only cheese based items to tempt me. But I control and resist so that I do not break my resolution. I have lost weight and hope to continue with the resolution. The most funnies and embarrassing thing happened yesterday. My nephew, who knows that I was not eating cheese, was telling his friend that his uncle was obese and so was not eating cheese. So it is better to be slim than be obese! Though I was embarrassed when I heard it, I couldn't stop laughing at the words of the 3 year old kid. The minute you say you do not want any extra toppings or extra cheese, and then people question whether you are dieting! I am getting used to this new form of attention and enjoying it! A simple no, has made me important, laughing stock and lots more! I never knew a small word could make so much difference.
Recession has shown that expenditure can land us in soup. Families which have managed to save have survived, and those who did not are facing a lot of problems. I find that the earning capacity of each person has increased extensively and young people tend to spend much. Just think a second before you spend so much on birthday bashes or parties or clothes or jewelry. You could save a percentile of it, and even help the needy. There are so many people who require help and it is possible for us to help them if we could Just Say No to over expenditure. In other words if we could curtail our greed, then it is possible to see a smile on someone's face. I can assure that a person achieves more happiness when he sees someone smile than throwing a lavish party or filling your wardrobe with new items!
My friend celebrated her son's 10th birthday. She did not throw a party but instead took him to an orphanage where he spent an entire evening playing with the kids and also had supper with them. As they were returning back, he asked his mother whether he could share a few of his toys which he was not using with his friends in the orphanage. She says with tears in her eyes that she feels that she had done the best job as a parent! She did not preach or make him understand, instead made him spend some time with the kids and that helped the young lad understand a lot of things! Isn't it time to curtail those unnecessary expenses?
My previous article suggested that one needs to be firm and decline when he is asked for help. But how would you say no? I find it very difficult to decline when I ma asked and it takes a lot of courage to say no. So, I thought about a few tips which would make this process simpler.
1. When the person asks for your help, irrespective of the work that you are doing give a patient hearing to his problem, this shows that you are genuinely interested in helping him.
2. Secondly, ask him for some time to think over. Do not rush and give your opinion straight away on whether it is possible to help or not to help.
3. Think over if you can really help or you have some other work. If you have some other equally important work, then give priority to it
4. Go back to the person who asked your help and explain your position. Make careful usage of words and do not use words like your work is more important than his. One must realize that the word no does not hurt a person, but it is the framing of the words that makes a big difference. So be careful while choosing words!
These are the steps that I follow when I am in a fix on how to decline! I know it is difficult to say no, but it is even more difficult to take up a lot of work and mess them unnecessarily!
This is an incident in a novel which I read recently. I am not able to remember the book or the author, but the incident goes like this. There is a young attorney and after he finishes his day's work is about to leave office. Then another woman attorney requests him whether he could do her work of checking some documents. He agrees to do it, though he did not have sleep for a few days. So he spends another sleepless night doing some one else's work and then finds him in a mess due to some problem in the document checking. The reason cited by the protagonist on why he chose to do another person's work was that he did not know how to decline. In other words he did not know how to say no! This is a common problem people do not know how to decline or say no. The reason cited is that they feel that when they say no it means they are hurting people. I think it is very insane, when you can't do something then it is better to say no, and keep away from it. It is necessary that people give importance to their priorities and do not burden themselves. There is nothing wrong in helping out, but if you do not have time for your own work, then is it possible to help somebody else? There is nothing wrong in saying a no when you just can't manage!
